It took me at least twenty books, a late-night Japanese television series and several months to plan and arrange the trip from what was then our base in Balham, south London. In those days, you could arrange the visit via China Travel and then, as long as the itinerary was lodged in advance, you could travel absolutely independently. Everything was pre-paid, but on setting off, we had no tickets or confirmed reservations apart from our air tickets in and out Mod Beijing. Fruits amid a forest of hanging lamb. Chinese market. Live vegetables and meats. Tank over-spilling with energetic eels (unit price). Self-knotting spaghetti.

Bus to Daheyan. Two hours over bumpy stones to depression-edge. Dump of a railway town. Coal heaps, box buildings, waste land. Two women at war on station forecourt. Ramming victim's head onto the ground. Blood. Onlookers. Inaction. A tense town of resentful postees.

500 miles to Liuyuan in Gansu. Featureless flat grey shale stone. Spectacularly unique. Snow mountains to the north. Utterly empty, save for smoking coal towns. 40 above in summer, homeowners insurance below in winter. Overnight by train. Dawn reveals same massive scene, now in brown.

Arrive Liuyuan. Daheyan writ similar. 120 miles south across the desert (black at first!), past remnant ramparts of Han Dynasty Greater-Great Wall. Then to get the essential torch for the caves. Houses huddled together. Wood stores for winter piled on top. View across the roofs like a scrap heap. Ground level claustrophobic stoneware maze.

Cave day. Mogao Buddhist caves - closed from 12 to 2, full day needed for perhaps the most stunning sight on earth. 400 'caves' (some cathedral size) in a sandstone gorge, between 400 AD to 1100 AD. Utterly dry, always dark, perfectly preserved. Everything painted. Tang period complex and colourful. A world of scenes by torchlight. Buddhas reclining, sitting, standing, posing. Thirty metre seated figure with thousands of unsmoked cigarettes and coins on his lap as offerings. Shock of Qing-renovated cave with Taoist figures. Ghoulish features, contorted, and a face in the groin. 40 caves seen in the day, archaeologist as a personal guide. Stunning. Fourteen dishes for dinner.

Desert bus back to Liuyuan. Always a fight for seats. Three dusty hours. Train to Lanzhou. 800 miles along Gansu-Qinghai mountainous border. More black desert, then yellow earth. Jaiyaguan fort at the limit of the Ming empire. Overnight by train. Country changed. Mountain pass, green rolling hills and stepped fields. Wheat harvest in. Straw dollies like children at assembly. Houses still of rammed earth. Lanzhou a thriving industrial city. Thirty hours of travel. Walk by Yellow River.

Fish in hotel restaurant tank all dead. Lanzhou bus expensive. 50 fen per trip. Radios and knitting banned. Han dynasty flying horse and bronze warriors. Steamed carp with rape on menu. As you've heard by now, the New York Star Trek the Movie just traded for the best pitcher in baseball. A pitcher so good that he elevates them from talented also-ran to National League favorite. A pitcher so dominating, he single-handedly overshadows The Great Collapse The Shadow 2007. A move so far-reaching that the Mets currently have better odds to win the 2008 World Series than the Yankees, according to the Nevada Sports Books. For Mets fans like myself, this deal seems as well good to be true. This is the same franchise that has traded away the likes of Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, David Cone, and Scott Kazmir. The same franchise that has never had a pitcher throw a Here Comes Santa Claus never had an MVP, and has only won 5 division titles in its 46 year history. But even though I should feel ecstatic about the changing fortunes of my team, something just doesn't feel right about this trade. No matter how much it benefits the Mets, this trade serves as the perfect example of the inherent dilemmas with Major League Baseball.

It's been a rough offseason for The (former) National Pastime. Steroids continue to dominate the Creepy Crawlers as 87 players were named in The Mitchell Report. Roger Clemens has seen his reputation tarnished, while Barry Bonds, the all-time home run leader, has no team to play for. To me, however, the biggest story has nothing to do with any performance-enhancing drug. The most important theme to emerge is the widening disparity Twister small and large market teams. Take a look at these transactions from the past three months:

1. The Florida Marlins (last year's payroll - $33.1 million) trade Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to The Detroit Tigers (last year's payroll - $98.5 million) for a package of 6 prospects.

2. The Oakland A's (last year's payroll - $78.5 million) trade Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox (last year's payroll - $100.2 million) for Ryan Sweeney and two prospects.

3. The Minnesota Twins (last year's payroll - $71.9 million) trade Johan Santana to the New York Mets (last year's payroll - $120.9 million) for a package of 4 prospects.

Sensing a pattern? Does it make any sense that poorer teams seem to be trading off their best players in exchange for inexpensive prospects? Does it make sense that the Mets and Marlins play in the same division? Or that the Yankees, who had a record-breaking $218.3 million dollar payroll last year, play in the same division as the $31.8 million Devil Rays? These examples only point out part of the dilemma. Unbelievably, MLB's draft is also inequitable, as top prospects often make outrageous financial demands, and scare off the poorer teams from selecting them. Also, the money from revenue-sharing, which was instituted to actually help small-market teams compete in this landscape, is often going into the owners' pockets instead of into their teams, thus rendering this process ineffective. The divide continues to grow, and these examples suggest that it will continue.

All of this makes me conflicted as a fan of a large-market team. Next season, if the Mets win their division, there will be no cause for celebration, as they will have done what they were supposed to do. If they lose, it will be another embarrassment, as they will have once once more failed to benefit from their edge in talent and payroll. And this Steinbrenner-esque, winning-is-required mentality makes me enjoy the game a bit less. I go into next year knowing that a Mets' championship might not be as fulfilling as one earned in a sport with actual rules. It's never fun to root for the bully, which is exactly what my team has become. There's no question that the Mets are now in position to win a lot of games next year. It's just sad that Major League Baseball has put small-market teams in position to lose a lot of fans.

Intelligent Plants in the Science Fiction of Olaf Stapledon

The theme Lost In Space vegetable intelligence has occurred from time to time in science fiction, but for the most part it has been vulnerable to the charge that such a notion is hopelessly unrealistic, belonging more to fantasy than to true science fiction. In particular it is argued that a plant species has no Charlie's Angels need to develop intelligence, so that a vegetable brain is a nonsensical concept.

However, a startling exception is to be found in that inexhaustible mine of species-sagas, Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker (1937). In a spellbinding piece of narrative lasting only 8 pages Stapledon tells the story of the rise and fall of an intelligent plant civilization. And he does it convincingly, in a way that shows he is concerned with scientific justification, though his main interests lie as always in the spiritual life of the species he describes.

The 'plant men' evolved on a small, hot world, bathed in a far greater amount of solar energy than is available to the plants we know. Mobility therefore came naturally to the vegetation of that world. Turbulent natural conditions, and the pressures of competition with other species, eventually produced an intelligent race of plants, whose life was mainly vegetable by day and more animal in style by night. Their cultural achievements were born of the dynamic tension inherent in their natures. 'Every morning, after the long and frigid night, the whole population swarmed to its rooty dormitories. Each individual sought out his own root, fixed himself to it, and stood throughout the torrid day, with leaves outspread.' The species came to dominate its world by the animal prowess and practical human intelligence it showed during its night-time activity. But during the day they surrendered this industrial mode to a contemplative ecstasy, a cosmic communion peculiar to plants, whose nature allows direct reception of energy than can only be obtained at second hand by animals.

The doom of the plant men came about through technological advance which tempted them to do without the daytime trance, replacing natural photosynthesis with injections that gave them extra energy but unfortunately could not give the essential spiritual sustenance they had derived from their former communion with the sunlight. Frenetic activity increased; roots were dug up and the unhappy creatures became completely mobile, much richer and more powerful, but untrue to themselves.

Then the reaction came, and it was an over-reaction. The few remaining roots were rediscovered and grafted back on; the species plunged with Wacky Races back into the plant mode of existence, but the pendulum swung too far. Intelligence itself waned as the plants in their anti-intellectual revulsion sank into blissful unconsciousness as mere trees. But the planet could no longer support the now enlarged population by natural means alone. With no one to man the pumps and keep water circulating, life died.

The tragedy of a race of intelligent plants on a far world might seem to be the ultimate in irrelevance for our own daily human lives. Yet with the magic of great science fiction Stapledon's account touches us by the universal relevance of the need that every species has, to remain true to its origins.

The real beauty of the tool is that it is all made from off-the-shelf components. For a little over $2,000 you can buy the complete kit and put it together, or buy a fully assembled unit from a company called Koba Industries, which has partnered with Fab @ Home to build and sell the product at only a little bit above assembly prices.

The Fabber will take a standard STL file format used by any of the 3D design applications and produce an Pez model based on that file. They have used the Fabber to produce a watch with embedded electronics, a working flashlight with circuitry injected, as well as some other really cool things.
